About
“By chance, an exceptional parcel of Syrah was in need of a home…instead, it found a garage.”
The spark was lit in the heart of Beaujolais. Ollie and his wife Rebecca, two Kiwi backpackers on an adventure through France in their trusty VW van, found themselves parked up for the 1999 grape harvest. Days were spent handpicking grapes, while evenings unfolded in the courtyard of a dimly lit chateau, sharing wine and stories with fellow vintage workers. Each glass told a tale—the vineyards, the growers, the makers, and the unpredictable seasons. It was here Ollie realized his future belonged to wine. Returning to New Zealand, he pursued viticulture and winemaking at EIT in Hawke's Bay.
What followed was a journey of grape harvests across vineyards and wineries in both New Zealand and France, honing his craft.
In 2007, Ollie stepped into the role of Chief Viticulturist at Villa Maria Estate, mentored by the legendary Sir George Fistonich. Living his dream, he still found time at the end of each vintage to take home a small parcel of grapes, crafting wine in his garage—a reminder of the passion that started it all.
