Radburnd Cellars truly is a testament to the impressive winemaking career of Kate Radburnd, whose career in Hawke's Bay spans over 40 summers. With previous experience working for larger wineries, Kate, (another talented winemaker from our friends across the ditch), eventually recognized that her true calling lay in crafting wines that aligned with her personal vision rather than conforming to the preferences of others or specific markets. This realization led her to embark on a new venture, motivated by her true vocation to create wines exactly as she envisioned, while simultaneously presenting Hawke's Bay as a distinguished producer of premium wines.

Radburnd Cellars has established a steadfast focus on producing what they consider 'ultra-premium' wines. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, Kate and her daughter Penelope focus solely on three wines each vintage, meticulously selected to showcase Hawke's Bay as a cool climate region par excellence: Chardonnay, Syrah, and Merlot Cabernet. These varietals serve as a canvas for Kate to paint the ever evolving picture of the region's distinctive terroir and its ability to yield exceptional wines.

Despite facing significant challenges along the way, including the audacious endeavor of launching a new wine brand amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent setbacks caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, Radburnd Cellars remains resolute. The winery endured the loss of its winery site, equipment, lab/offices, and a substantial portion of its bottled wine stock and packaging. However, the team behind Radburnd Cellars wants to assure us that their commitment to crafting exceptional wines remains unyielding. Currently in the process of rebuilding, their commitment to their vision stands firm.

What sets Radburnd Cellars apart extends beyond their unwavering dedication to quality wines. Notably, Kate and Penelope form New Zealand's only (we think) mother-daughter winemaking team, infusing the brand with a unique blend of familial heritage and generational knowledge, which is really rather rare in such a young winemaking country.

Kate, brings her wealth of experience in all aspects of winemaking, business, wine judging and creative vision along with her daughter Penelope, a winemaker herself and marketing manager for Radburnd Cellars. The women-strong team also includes Rachel in Administration/Finance, with Wendee in Sales.
