About
Hopesgrove Wines is a boutique vineyard situated on a north facing slope in Hawke’s Bay. This premium producer has three hectares of vines planted, sustaining a balanced canopy with low yields and high quality fruit, making single vineyard wines that are distinctive, rich, artisanal, and crafted exclusively from their hand harvested fruit.
Winemaker, Pieter Koopman, discovered his dream to grow and make wine in Hawke’s Bay when he was visiting New Zealand 20 years ago. Originally from California, Pieter found it impossible not to fall in love with fine wine and good food after working in high class restaurants and hotels, paired with his experience studying and living throughout the wine regions of Europe. It was when Pieter met fellow American, Craggy Range winemaker Doug Wisor, and tasted his first Syrah’s from New Zealand, that his dream was realised – he knew NZ was the place to produce world-class quality Syrah and Chardonnay.
So, after a few years of traveling back and forth between California and Hawke’s Bay, Pieter, his wife, and their two young children moved to New Zealand in 2005. They planted grapes in the Burgundy and Northern Rhone varietals and selectively matched rootstocks and clones to the site-specific microclimates. In 2009 Pieter crafted his first vintage of Hopesgrove wines.
Pieter’s daily involvement in the vineyard means he is attuned to his vines, the weather and the soil, creating a strong connection between the vineyard and his winemaking. Hopesgrove vineyard is hand harvested and the wine is handcrafted, resulting in a product that is a true expression of their terroir and the care Pieter pours into the entire process.
