About

An exceptional boutique vineyard and winery tucked away in Matakana, doing incredible things. Owners David and Mary planted their vineyard in 1987 with Chardonnay and Merlot, and later decided to change their plans and plant Sangiovese and Dolcetto varieties exclusively. Three generations on, they are now one of the only vineyards in New Zealand to focus entirely on these Italian grapes.

Heron’s Flight was one of the first producers to be established in Matakana in the late 80’s. Matakana has a warm and sunny climate which is very well suited for producing elegant red wines and has a similar climate to parts of Italy where Dolcetto and Sangiovese thrive.

David, Mary, and their family embody sustainable practices, including permaculture and water conservation. Every single wine is handcrafted meticulously by David, and made in small batches. Their wines are an expression of David’s winemaking style, Mary’s love of connecting people with wine and food and a deep reflection of their terroir. You won’t find Heron’s Flight just anywhere, try wine lists from top restaurants, specialist wine stores, and of course, through us!
