About
Small batch wines made in a repurposed old Kauri barn in the foothills of the Waima Ranges in Hokianga, Northland. Gravel Down Wines focus on organic and sustainable viticulture practices and make intriguing wines. Winemaker, Laurence and partner, Rebecca are the couple behind this incredible little set up, starting Gravel Down with a dream to establish a creative and sustainable micro-winery, which they are executing very, very well.
All Gravel Down wines are handpicked, crafted and bottled by Laurence and Rebecca with the help of their friends and family.
“Gravel Down is a nod to the interrelationship between the vines and alluvial soils of New Zealand’s vineyards. Our name references the contrasting textures required to develop balanced and harmonious wines. Gravel – the structured, the hard and angular. Down – the soft, ethereal, and elegant.” - Gravel Down Wines
Gravel Down produces very small parcels of wine from carefully selected, primarily certified organic vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and West Auckland. They make between 3-7 barrels of wine each year (900-2000 bottles).
