About

Equilibrium: “A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.”

Equilibrium Makers: “Simone (Italian) and Lucie (French) unite to make wine in New Zealand.”

This new boutique label released their first vintage in 2020, and are already making their mark in the New Zealand wine industry.

Simone studied viticulture and oenology in Piemonte, Italy, for six years. 2014 was the year Simone fell in love with the Wairarapa, and in 2016 he met and fell in love with Lucie, who is from Jura, France. Lucie has a background in advertising, and knows how to steer the ship, so a few years after the ‘Frenchitalian’ couple met, they decided to create their own wine label.

Equilibrium’s wines are made at Colombo (another BC producer in Martinbrough) and they source most of their grapes from Pond Paddock Vineyard in Te Muna which Simone has managed since 2014. The total block is only 1.6 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – very small batch! Te Muna means ‘secret’ or ‘special’ in Māori, and this is evident in the wines being produced in the area. However, the secret is well and truly out, with hundreds of hectares being planted in Te Muna over the last five years by commercial producers.

Simone and Lucie have one golden rule when it comes to drinking their wine – enjoy them any time, but do so in good company and with good food.
