About
25 years ago, a journey began on a bare piece of land that captured the hearts of its owners, Mike and Margaret.
They didn’t expect to own a vineyard and had originally planned to plant their entire site in olives. A local winemaker's visit changed the course, convinced that grapes were the rightful crop for such exceptional land. This didn’t sit well with winemaking pioneer and neighbour, Bill Brink, who said it would be a crime not to plant a vineyard.
The local winemaker agreed to assist only on pleasant days and when inclined, and so, 6,000 vines later, they had themselves a vineyard – thank goodness!! Sadly, three years later, the winemaker passed away, leaving the owners with a vineyard and a steep learning curve. Seeking guidance, they found a mentor in Martinborough Vineyard, who nurtured their vineyard's growth.
Today, this little vineyard produces small batches of award winning, handcrafted, intensely flavoured wine grown in stony soils and ideal conditions.
In 2010, Mike & Margaret ventured into their own wine brand, launching The Elder Pinot in partnership. As their journey unfolded, 2023 marked a significant chapter as they transitioned their wine into the Blue Earth Estate family, which had always been synonymous with their olive oil brand.
The name Blue Earth pays homage to Mike's hometown in Minnesota, known for its deep, rich black soil with a distinctive blue hue when plowed. In contrast, their land boasts an old river terrace with a limestone base, offering minimal topsoil yet proving ideal for olives and grapes.
As life brings seasons of change, it is a real joy and a privilege to be a part of Mike & Margaret’s journey and we look forward to popping some of these gems into your packs!
