About Eaton Wines

Eaton Wines, a boutique producer in Marlborough, was established in 2014 after the families departure from the TerraVin brand which they had established in 1999.

The entire family, Mike, Jo and sons Harrison and Blake, all play a part in this premium wine label. Mike’s involvement in the New Zealand wine industry started in 1981 and with his wife Jo, Mike established some of New Zealand’s most renowned Pinot Noir vineyards (Clayvin, Clay Hills, Outpost, Calrossie) and the TerraVin wine brand.

Mike manages the nutrition and disease programs for premium growers throughout Marlborough and Nelson, consulting to over 1,500 hectares. Among these growers, Mike selects small parcels from exceptional sites, and with Harrison and Blake, hand tends their selected areas. Extremely small batches are produced from these meticulously cared for sites – a maximum of 1,200 bottles are made of each wine.

Eaton Wines’ philosophy is “Winemaking is also a family affair as all participate in hand-harvest through to bottling by hand onsite. Eaton winemaking is about respecting the fruit, allowing wild yeasts to ferment the wines with no other additions. This philosophy extends to blending and “marriage” where wines are settled naturally, and a small Sulphur addition is made prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered.”

Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Cameron Douglas MS

“Complex bouquet with layers of fruit, lees and barrel spices. Wood influenced fruit flavours of peach, nectarine and baked goods emerge, baking spices of vanilla and a little clove also show. Dry tense and fruity on the palate with firm textures, high acidity and less barrel combinations. A lovely wine showing the breadth and depth Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough can bring. Drink now and through 2024.” Score: 94/100.

Fortissimo Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Bob Campbell MS

“This wine is not intended to be subtle”” states the back label. It’s barrel-fermented and aged for 12 months in 600-litre puncheons and allowed 100% malolactic fermentation. Rich, weighty sauvignon that’s more about texture, oak and yeast lees influence than it is about varietal character. A creamy wine with a lingering finish.” Drink from 2018 to 2023. Score: 93/100 Rank 29 of 132 tasted.

Merlot – Malbec – Cabernet 2015

The Real Review and Cellar Talk

“Quite a ripe and appealing red, with sweet berry fruit and plum flavours that gain added complexity from a subtle fresh herb influence. A smooth-textured and accessible red that’s good now but should develop well in bottle.” Score: 93/100. Ranked 8 of 38 NZ Merlot Blends Drink from 2018 to 2022.

Thistle Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Bob Campbell MW

“Barrel-fermented and oak-matured sauvignon blanc with concentrated ginger, capsicum, struck flint, bread, brioche and nutty lees flavours. A weighty, textural wine that offers a good balance between varietal flavours and winemaker influence.” Drink from 2018 to 2023. Score: 95/100. Rank 23 of 114 tasted.
