A boutique vineyard in Martinborough established in 2014 by Swiss-Irish couple Baptist Sieber and Carolyn Irwin. The reins were then handed over to German-Kiwi husband and wife team Thomas and Nicola Röckinger in March 2018. Colombo make small batches of Pinot Noir, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Syrah which are all crafted by hand with a focus on harnessing the region’s distinctive conditions to produce elegant and expressive wines.
Thomas studied winemaking and viticulture in Weinsberg, Germany. As part of his studies, he spent the 2012 vintage in New Zealand (where he met Nicola) at Martinborough Vineyard and returned to Germany in August 2012 to finish his degree. Thomas then moved back to Napier (Nicola’s hometown) in January 2015 and worked for Trinity Hill as a permanent cellar hand until moving back to Martinborough in 2016 where he worked for Paddy Borthwick as the Assistant Winemaker.
Before Colombo, Nicola studied and worked as an accountant (CA) in Wellington until moving to Martinborough to cover a good friend’s maternity leave at Martinborough Vineyard and “to save” for the planned OE in August 2012. She then met Thomas when he was in New Zealand for vintage and didn’t save a penny… (spent it all on Pinot). She then moved to London as originally planned and spent almost every weekend flying between London and Germany before moving to Germany in 2014. In 2015, the couple moved to New Zealand and in 2018, started living their dream!
