5 Boutique Cellar Doors You Need to Visit This Summer (& Outfit Inspiration Thanks to The Borrowed Collective)

Let's support the little guys this Summer! It's well and truly Cellar Door season so we've put together a list of boutique producers you should visit - we know from experience you'll love them. We've also partnered with The Borrowed Collective, a NZ dress rental business, to bring you sustainable outfit inspiration for all of your Cellar Door ventures!

Rannach Vineyard
Auckland

Rannach Vineyard is a fantastic little boutique set up in Clevedon Auckland, run by Anna and Steve Mastrovich. The vineyard was planted 25 years ago by Anna’s parents, Tony and Christine Morgan.

When you visit Rannach Vineyard, you can expect a warm welcome from two very friendly owners, who will then treat you to a tasting of their wines. You can try their Merlot, Merlot Malbec Cabernet Franc blend, and their Merlot Rosé. From here, we recommend that you plonk yourself on a bean bag under a tree in their spacious backyard, and relax!

Cellar Door Hours:

Sat-Sun 12pm-4pm

Other times available by arrangement.

Moy Hall

Martinborough

Boutiques wines, unreal food, supporting a Kiwi family and their small business = yes, please!

Moy Hall is known for their incredible restaurant that looks out onto their vineyard - and of course, their single vineyard, small batch wines. Phill (winemaker) and wife Carolyn, are the owners and operators of Moy Hall and they produce Pinot Noir, Syrah, Rosé, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Noble Rot Dessert Wine. Depending on availability, you can try them all. If they're not too busy you can enjoy a tasting at your table while eating lunch, otherwise, just head up to the counter and get the rundown from Phill.

Opening Hours:

Thursday-Monday 11.30am-4pm (6pm on Saturday).

Grey Ridge

Central Otago

Grey Ridge is a boutique vineyard in Alexandra, Central Otago, that aims to produce small amounts of top quality single-vineyard Pinot Noir - and they have accommodation!

With excellent terroir, hand tended vines and hand picked grapes, they consistently produce a low yield of flavour rich fruit, which turns into incredible Pinot Noir you can try at their tasting room. Owners since 2015, Paul and Sue, are fantastic hosts and will talk you through their wines upon arrival, giving you insider knowledge into the makings of their Pinot's. If you stay at Grey Ridge, you’ll be treated to a private tasting with Paul and Sue, and a vineyard tour (a behind the scenes walk and talk, ask as many questions as you’d like!). You can also arrange to have dinner with the hosts.

Opening Hours:

Monday to Saturday: 10am-5pm,

Sunday: 1-5pm

Hans Herzog
Marlborough

Hans Herzog in Marlborough is regarded as one of NZ’s finest world class wine and dine experiences. Their stylish Cellar Door welcomes you into the fantastic world of boutique wine. Herzog is a premium, multi-award winning organic vineyard and winery, run by couple Therese and Hans Herzog. Hans is the vigneron, and has full control over the winemaking and viticulture of all 28 different grape varieties within his 11.5 hectare vineyard. He releases only the highest quality of wines, that are 100% handcrafted from his own vines.

When visiting Herzog, choose from a Tasting, Tour and Tasting, Private Wine Tour, or their Tailor Made Connoisseur Estate Tour, and prepare for an experience like no other.

de la terre
Hawke's Bay

Where to even start with this one... in one word, A M A Z I N G. Do you like premium artisan wines made by an absolute legend and craftsman? We thought you might. De la terre is a boutique winery in Hawke’s Bay, and is the region's only earth brick winery. Which might I add, was built by the winemaker, Tony Prichard. Also handcrafted by Tony is their wooden label machine (yes, they solely use this to label their wines!), their outdoor seating area, the winery, the cafe, the furniture, and basically anything else you can lay your eyes on.

Visit de la terre to enjoy a chat with Tony about his small batch, handcrafted wines (that are made on site), and delicious food made by Tony's wife, Kaye, and her dream team. De la terre is an experience and a half - you’ll love it.

Opening Hours:

10am -5pm Friday to Sunday, from the first weekend in October to the first weekend in June (Queen's Birthday Weekend).
